Walk the Camino de Santiago
May 18-29, 2025
Sarria to Santiago de Compostela

Itinerary

Gather in Sarria. The van will take us from the Santiago airport to Sarria, our gathering place. Day two we will rest and enjoy a side trip to Monasterio de San Xulián in nearby Samos.

From Sarria our journey will take us through rolling Galician countryside. We will pass by an Iron Age archaeological site, medieval chapels, receive the pilgrim blessing in Palas de Rei, and visit Melide, the pulpo capital of the region. We’ll overnight in Arzúa known for its cheese with a camino story.

A highlight will be walking to Monto del Gozo where, for a thousand years, pilgrims raced to be the first to spot the cathedral towers of Santiago de Compostela. Bagpipes will serenade us as we enter the cathedral plaza. We will overnight in the fishing village of Finisterre where we will give thanks for the journey on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. Finally, in Santiago we will enjoy a farewell Galician dinner.

A Note from Host Joyce DeToni-Hill

The Spirit of this Camino

Pilgrimage is our opportunity to re-set our lives, grow our faith, and connect. The camino will be bursting with good energy as we share this path with the world’s neighbors. As a faith-based walk in community, we will gather for an hour or so each afternoon to reflect on the day’s walk — what sparkled, what challenged, how we were stretched. We will review the next day’s walk and check in on how everyone is doing. I’ve designed this pilgrimage to provide gracious space for everyone to walk their best way.

Enjoy supportive companionship of others and/or claim space for yourself to walk in solitude as you need.

This is your camino. If you have some walking limitations, I can show you how to use taxis to support you. If an e-bike is your way to camino, we can explore that too.

Orientation: There will be three sessions by Zoom. We will review training tips, packing list, resources, details, questions, and travel advice. We’ll discuss Spanish culture and camino etiquette as well as spiritual preparations. I can provide you with resources to use in your local church for sending you off with the traditional pilgrim blessing!
